Australians enjoy reasonable equality of wealth. A large proportion of families own two cars and have relatively high disposable incomes. A benign climate helps most to live comfortably. However, high unemployment during the 1990s' recession has widened the gap between rich and poor, and Australia has slipped down the world standard of living list in recent years. The incidence of homelessness, critical poverty and child neglect due to poverty have increased slightly.
